Growing Up

Those two words are probably some of the scariest, mostly when they are used together. For me, they are terrifying. I guess I never realized how not ready I was to grow up until it started happening.

  • Money

  • Success

  • Failure

  • Friends

  • Family

  • Life

  • Death

Those are just a few of the things that run through my head when I think about growing up. Instead of taking things one month at a time, one day at a time, or even one minute at a time, I think about everything ALL of the time and boy oh boy, it creates nothing but worry.

I think the scariest thing about growing up is becoming your own person. When you’re younger, everything seems to be planned out. Daycare, school, sports, band. Even in high school, you do make your own decisions but only to an extent. There’s still some influence, whether it be from your parents, teachers or friends. As you grow up though and become more independent, the decisions you make are based heavily on YOUR thoughts and I think that’s what makes it both great and scary. It feels good to be independent, but it also feels like there’s a new weight to bare. There’s so much more responsibility and it’s an adjustment. I wish I was one of those people who handled change well, but I’m not. I like to think I am, but when it comes to the changes parallel with growing up, I’m a hot mess haha (minus the hot).

But I know that the best thing to do is take things slowly and really focus on taking life one step at a time. It sounds cliche, but I think it will work; until I forget haha.

But here’s that reminder for you and for me:

TAKE EACH MINUTE, EACH DAY, EACH MOMENT ONE STEP AT A TIME, LITTLE BY LITTLE, AND EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY

Below is a picture my mom sent me as I was writing this post ironically enough. As I read it, I kind of felt like it spoke to what this post was about so I decided to add it in. I felt like it kind of related to what I wrote regarding decision making as you grow up. While the pressure of making decisions on your own is intimidating and scary, I think that this quote kind of speaks to the idea of not being so afraid. We’re gonna make bad decisions but I guess it’s about not letting those decisions keep us from making decisions that could lead to something amazing.

Everything that I’m saying here is stuff I need to be reminded of on a daily basis, so if you feel like you relate and think you’re alone, just know that you’re not. YOU CAN DO THIS WHOLE GROWING UP THING! Just as this picture says, try not to live in fear. Try not to overthink. Focus on living, and take everything that comes with living little by little. Change is scary, trust me I’m scared out of my mind, but it’s okay to be scared; something I’m learning every day. Grow in confidence, in righteousness, thought, emotion and happiness, and soon enough growing up will just be what you do instead of what you think about.

As not to be hypocritical, I’ll work on taking my own advice. So this is me telling you that I, (insert my name here), will

TAKE EACH MINUTE, EACH DAY, EACH MOMENT ONE STEP AT A TIME, LITTLE BY LITTLE, AND EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY.
